Animation Project

Media conglomeration and its globalization has been a cause for concern for a while now. Companies like Time Warner, General Electric, Viacom, and Clear Channel are all large conglomerates that have power in a variety of different industries. I chose General Electric because of its control over so many different facets of different companies and industries. General Electric is a company that sells home appliances but also has stock in the entertainment industry. They own Universal, one of the largest film production companies in the world. This production company has created some of the most memorable movies to date, including "Brokeback Mountain," which is shown in the Animation section of my project. Universal also has its hand in television, producing one of America's most popular current television programs, The Office. Aside from just producing television shows, General Electric also owns a variety of different television networks, including Bravo, NBC News, and Telemundo. I think that it is incredibly interesting that such an American conglomerate like General Electric would own Telemundo because it is a Spanish speaking channel with an entirely different demographic than most other networks on cable TV. General Electic, unbeknownst to many, also has its hand in other divisions with interests in commercial and consumer finance, healthcare, industrial (as well as the previously mentioned domestic) appliances, and media distribution. General Electic functions in a variety of different countries, bring different cultures together in the case of its ownership of Telemundo. Although General Electric is a large media conglomerate, it has been an incredibly effective and important company that has changed many of the industries that it currently has a stake in.
